Last night Youth Legislature started a new tradition with the delegations’ participation in Roll Call. Each delegation performed a cheer or song for their school. Even the Minnesota delegation- who also served as judges with Jonathan Quisenberry, D’Jara Britton, and Amanda Dfluke- got in on the act; they gave us a lesson on their Minnesota vocabulary and dialect. Carter, Lanier, and Brew Tech joined forces to perform a cheer and wow the crowd with back flips. Candidate Chad DuBois said, “It was fun. It was a chance to get out of our shell and open up to other people.” Congratulations to the winners of the completion: 1st-Tuskegee; 2nd-Auburn; 3rd- Spain Park. Special thanks to the night’s emcee Secretary of State Katherine Cardona.

Senate Bill 22, entitled Eat Green, proposes that all public school lunch rooms be forbidden to use styrofoam plates. This environmental enthusiast no doubt had the pretty blue sky and green trees in mind when they wrote this bill and not the hands of the person stuck washing all of the alternative dishes. Nevertheless, one cannot help but think that the idea of fine china in a high school lunchroom is about as unusual as a Chinese man in the NBA. But hey, there is hope, just look at Yoa Ming. I wonder what the author of this bill thinks about the lunch and dinner ware here at Youth Legislature?

The Youth Legislature newspaper staff discovered Saturday morning that a University of Alabama fan has mysteriously wrote a number “3″ beside the number “one” most outrageous bill. How ironic that the most outrageous bill was the RTR 13 bill, which gives glorification to the number 13 in honor of the University of Alabama. The perpetrator of this hi-jinks has yet to be discovered, but the entire staff would like to warn the public of this out of control Alabama fan on the loose. Guard any number “ones” left alone.

The First Year delegates learn about the legislative process. The first bill debated was FY016, No Unemployment Tax for Employers Under Unfortunate Circumstances Act, by Josh Donaldson. This bill is about any employer whose business is closed for an unfortunate circumstance and is not able to pay their employees should not have unemployment tax increased in the case that the employees begin drawing unemployment from the state while the business is closed. The bill was debated. One of the first people to debate the bill asked, “what do you consider unfortunate circumstance?” Donaldson replied, “Nothing under the intention of the business owner.”

Support HB007! This bill pertains to drug testing welfare applicants. This is impressive to pass due to the mere fact that our tax money is a lot of times going to someone who would fail a drug test. The money we, as tax payers, so strenuously work for is going to support drug dealers and people who can not pass a drug test. It is nebulous to try to solicit money we labor for so someone can purchase illicit drugs. This bill would make it mandatory for people who apply for welfare to pass a drug test. This is a method to protect our money and ensure that people do not spend on drugs.
